Custom Color Licensing

We have a three spool minimum purchase on unique custom orders. You can avoid this minimum by combining colors that are already part of our line. For example, if you ordered a half and half style with our colors Wisdom and Jump we would waive the minimum purchase amount. We don't accept returns on custom orders. We can have such a small custom order amount as we are supplementing the color development costs by introducing the blends we like into our regular line. When your situation requires exclusivity in a custom color we do offer a temporary licensing of the custom color for a fee. If you want to develop a custom color that does not get introduced to our line we will provide a five year, renewable license to the custom color at a cost of $399. For orders over $1000 we will waive the first five year licensing fee.

These Earth Silk spools are made by hand in our Seattle studio. Our 100% silk hand dipped, bias cut ribbon dyeing process produces a unique look with subtle qualities that cannot be found in traditional ribbon dyeing. Our process creates almost zero waste and generates a lasting work of art.

These silk ribbons are colorfast (after washing) washable, dry-cleanable, 100% silk and are bias cut which gives them a nice body or stretch. Over time the cut edges will fray naturally. We highly recommend ordering samples if your project is color sensitive. We also recommend washing a sample to see how it behaves before working the silk into anything that may be exposed to water.

Our silk is traditionally dyed to create stunning works of art. These silk ribbons are colorfast (after washing) washable, dry-cleanable, 100% silk and are bias cut which gives them a dramatic drape. The cut on the bias means in a continuous spool; there is a seam every two yards and the raw unfinished edges will naturally soften with wear. We finish our seams with silk thread to help create a seamless appearance throughout the spools. We highly recommend ordering samples (which we send for free!) if your project is color sensitive.

These spools are made by Of The Earth. The hand dyed process produces a unique look that has subtle qualities that cannot be found in traditional ribbon dyeing. In conventional dyeing the yarn is first dyed in a vat and then loaded onto a loom where the strands are woven together to form the ribbon. In this hand dyeing method all of the action happens while the bias cut spool is tightly wrapped, that pressure resist influences where and how the dye is absorbed. We hope you enjoy our ribbons as much as we like making them! There are over 150 colors in our line and we continue to add more as our customers continue to bring custom requests. Since 1995 Of The Earth has been manufacturing hand made paper and converting it by hand into wedding invitations from their Seattle location. Online since 1997, this husband and wife team have been shipping fine invitations and custom made event supplies worldwide direct to brides and through their wholesale network. In 2010 after more than 10 years of research and experience selling hand dyed silks, Of The Earth launched their Earth Silk line which they now produce in their growing Seattle studio.

silk ribbon dyed to match a navy and green envelope

This envelope was sent to us by our friends at Fontastic Calligraphy in Atlanta. Owner Susan Hammer needed the perfect ribbon for her customer so she asked us to match the colors. This was the result!

In the many years that we have been working with the conventional silk dyes we have encountered time and time again inconsistencies from the dye manufacturer's goods that impact our colors. What we have found, for instance, is that one batch of "Black" has a visible green undertone to it and the next batch of "Black" has a visible blue undertone to it. Calls to the dye manufacture unfortunately are not met with helpful comments. Rather than speaking about the noticeable visible difference in both the wet and dry format of their product, they enquired about our dyeing process, suggesting that our methods were the root cause of the color difference in the finished fabric. As a result; when we open a new container of dye we have to rebuild some of our colors so that our finished silks match the ribbon colors you see on your sample cards. This is leading to a build up of "seconds" that we have on hand of colors that are close, but not on the money. You can find these in our store here in Seattle and on Etsy. Thanks for your understanding if you encounter color differences and know that we do everything we can to ensure a consistent and quality product of the highest standards.
